Synopsis
Disney’s The Little Mermaid follows Ariel, a curious young mermaid who dreams of exploring the human world beyond the sea. After rescuing Prince Eric from a shipwreck, Ariel makes a risky deal with the sea witch Ursula, trading her voice for the chance to live on land. With the help of her friends Flounder, Sebastian, and Scuttle, Ariel must navigate a new world and discover the courage to follow her heart. Filled with unforgettable songs and colorful characters, The Little Mermaid is a magical story about identity, courage, and finding one’s place in the world.
Director’s Note
The Little Mermaid is often remembered for its spectacle, music, and magic, but within this story are themes that offer rich opportunities for nuance and reflection. In approaching this production, I was particularly drawn to ideas of autonomy, isolation, sibling dynamics, fractured families, and the complicated journey of discovering who we are—especially when love is involved. Ariel’s story is not just about a mermaid who wants to live on land; it is about a young person searching for identity, voice, and independence within a world that both protects and limits her.
